PENCIL held its annual gala April 13, 2011 at Cipriani Wall Street and honored Paul Neuman and his company Neuman’s Catering.

Founder and owner Paul Neuman donates his company’s resources and his personal time to programs that build community. He began volunteering with PENCIL to be a Principal for a Day in 2005 as a way to give back to the public school system where he was educated. Assigned to Truman High School at Co-op City in the Bronx, Mr. Neuman began working with Principal Sana Nasser to develop a Culinary Arts Program, and this June 2011 they will graduate their 3rd class. Graduating seniors look forward to attending academic and culinary arts colleges throughout the US. In recognition of their accomplishment, Neuman’s donates chef’s coats to all Truman culinary arts graduates.

During the awards ceremony at PENCIL, Mr. Neuman expressed with pride and encouragement “If you think for a second that all is lost in our public schools, come with me to Truman one day for lunch in the student run cafe. Come see the kids preparing food at six in the morning. Or visit any of the dozens of schools where teachers are making headway and where PENCIL Partners are making a difference. And then, sign up to be a PENCIL Partner and put your own mark on a school. Pay it forward.“

Paul Neuman stated that he was both humbled and honored to be recognized by two such well-established community organizations. At the Coalition for the Homeless, Mr. Neuman expressed “It has been my honor and privilege to teach interviewing skills to the women in the First Step program.” He also shared the spotlight by honoring those who have taken part in the program “the real honorees here are the women in the First Step program. They have taken the first step to move from financial dependency to self-sufficiency and they are ready, willing and anxious to work.”

Paul Neuman is the artist and entrepreneur behind Neuman’s Catering, a company dedicated to culinary innovation, customer service and community involvement. He is the fourth generation of his family to operate a food business in New York.
