Earth Day is the perfect time to think about building a green home or updating an existing home with energy-efficient products to create a more comfortable home that costs less to operate, lasts longer and provides a healthy living environment.
Building a green home begins with the selection of land, the architectural style of the home, the materials and practices used throughout construction and how the home is operated and maintained when it is completed.
When building a new home, consumers and builders should think green right from the start by selecting an ENERGY STAR® approved house plan. Construction drawings from these new green house plans include everything from sustainable design to energy efficient building materials.
These new house plans were part of The House Designers first annual Green Home Plan Competition, designed to inspire consumers and builders to build healthy, affordable and energy efficient homes that incorporate green building techniques and eco-friendly products.
“With the World Bank reporting 80 countries with water shortages and with the rising costs of nonrenewable fossil fuels and their impact on our environment, more and more families are building energy efficient, environmentally conscientious homes,” says Tammy Crosby, CEO of The House Designers. “Our new collection inspires consumers to choose more energy efficient systems and appliances that reduce the impact on our environment and save thousands of dollars of energy costs over the life of their home.”
These plans were recently recognized by Green Builder Magazine, which featured more than 25 of these award-winning designs in their latest issue. They were chosen because of their innovative designs and technical detailing featuring the latest in green materials and systems to provide total home comfort and efficiency. All these designs feature timeless architectural styles and practical/flexible layouts to ensure years of comfortable living without sacrificing amenities and aesthetics. These plans were also showcased in the latest issue of Her Dream Home magazine.
These house plans feature elements of passive solar design for natural heating and cooling. With the rising costs in energy, it is important for architects and designers to use building orientation, window placements, roof overhangs, reflective barriers and other techniques to control natural solar energy. Another key element is an open floor plan, which assists with maximizing the effects of passive solar heating and cooling in a home.
Other key attributes include the use of sustainable building materials (SIPs, ICFs, optimal framing, roofing and spray-foamed attics), energy-efficient appliances, lighting and HVAC systems, as wells as water conserving bath products. When it comes to interior design there are many eco-friendly products to choose from like cabinetry, millwork, flooring, bath fixtures, countertops, paint and much more.
