Two restaurants have opened recently at University Village Marketplace (http://www.uvmarketplace.com), a mix of dining, retail and service offerings in the heart of Chicago’s historic Maxwell Street.

La Taberna Tapas (http://www.latabernatapas.com), 1301 S. Halsted St., (312) 243-9980, specializes in the namesake small dishes enjoyed in Spain, but with a modern interpretation. Examples include chicken croquettes with chipotle aioli, bacon-wrapped dates in a sherry reduction sauce, sautéed bay scallops with chistorra (Basque sausage), and beef empanadas with ancho chili sauce, which Pat Bruno of the Chicago Sun-Times described as having a “real romance of flavors.” Other offerings include three types of paella and entrée-sized Alaskan salmon and Cornish hens roasted on cedar planks. The restaurant carries a full selection of wines, beers, tequilas and sangrias -- including several infused with popular Latino ingredients such as pineapple, lavender, and jalapeno. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.

Lucky’s Sandwich Co. (http://www.luckysandwich.com), 717 W. Maxwell St., (312) 733-5700, is the second location of the Wrigleyville oversized sandwich institution known for its “eat three and it’s free” contest documented on the Travel Channel program Man vs. Food. The menu includes more than a dozen sandwiches -- all served “overstuffed” with a variety of meats grilled with melted cheese and served on thick-cut sliced French bread with tomatoes, an oil and vinegar coleslaw and hand-cut French fries all stacked on top. Salads, sides and chicken wings in eight flavors also are available, as is a full bar, featuring an extensive selection of domestic and imported beers. Hours are 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. on weekdays; 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. on weekends.
