Mother’s Invention of Remodeling Product Turns into a Thriving National Business That Continues to Grow Despite Tough Economy

Stay-at-home Mom's persistence pays off when major retailers begin stocking her home-remodeling product. Today, 18-year old company has grown to have a national presence and includes husband as part of the Pole-Wrap team.

Laurie and Dan Coleman of Pole-Wrap.

“Once we invented it, the real work began when I tried to get major home improvement stores to stock it,” Laurie Coleman said.

When Laurie and Dan Coleman of Troy, Mich. refinished their basement in 1993, they wanted to find an attractive way to cover up the ugly basement support poles, but a search of home improvement stores was for naught. So Laurie decided to invent a wood product that would wrap around the pole and fit the décor of a finished basement.

This invention, based out of necessity, has turned into a full-time business for both husband and wife, and today the Pole-Wrap oak products are stocked at The Home Depot and Lowe’s stores throughout the Northeast and Midwest, and all models are available on the stores websites nationally.

The product is made of half inch wide wood panels bonded to a flexible backing, and is available in 8 foot lengths with 12, 16 or 48-inch widths to fit virtually any basement pole.

Pole-Wrap is easy to install by simply cutting it to the length and width desired and gluing it directly onto the pole with any name brand construction adhesive. A cap and base molding can also be added to complete the look of a classic fluted column. Pole-Wrap comes in oak, cherry and maple wood. There is an MDF pre-sanded version for easy paint finishing.

The company also recently introduced two new Pole-Wrap accessories—a drink shelf to increase the practicality of a basement pole, and an add-on extension to enable the Pole-Wrap product to be used in basements with higher ceilings.

Of course, inventing the product now seems like the easy part.

“Once we invented it, the real work began when I tried to get major home improvement stores to stock it,” Laurie Coleman said. “But my dad was also an inventor and owned a successful manufacturing company, and he told me that when the right idea came along I would know it was right. That gave me confidence to try to take the product national.”

During the businesses start-up phase, Laurie ran it while raising two children and Dan continued his career as an advertising executive. Laurie said the product was originally only available via mail order, but was convinced that the buyers at major home improvement retailers would consider Pole-Wrap as a stock item.

“This didn’t happen overnight,” she said. “I had to submit a lot of evidence that justified Pole-Wrap on their shelves."

Finally, her persistence paid off when one regional purchasing manager at The Home Depot gave me a break and decided to test Pole-Wrap in their Michigan stores. Sales were good and eventually earned greater distribution into more stores across the country.”

From that point, the business really took off and Dan Coleman began work full time as Pole-Wrap’s vice president.

Today, Laurie continues to handle the product marketing and sales while Dan handles operations.

“This business is really a 24/7 type of venture. Laurie and I have found that the success of the product line is primarily due to its visual appeal and ease of installation for both homeowners and contractors. We are very excited about the future growth potential,” Dan Coleman said.
