Rallies on Privacy as Yahoo Backpedals

The World's Most Private Search Engine rolls out the welcome mat as Yahoo disappoints consumers concerned about their privacy. Startpage solidifies its position as the privacy leader by standing firm on its promise to not collect user data.

We believe the best and only way to protect consumer data is to not collect it in the first place.

Startpage, The World's Most Private Search Engine, is welcoming consumers upset by recent privacy changes at Yahoo. According to the Associated Press, Yahoo plans to increase the time it retains consumer search records to 18 months, reversing the company's past promise to anonymize this data after 90 days.

Yahoo indicated that it might also keep other kinds of user information for longer periods.

"We believe Yahoo made the wrong decision, but Startpage is standing by its privacy promises," said consumer privacy advocate Dr. Katherine Albrecht. "People are eager for better online privacy, and fortunately, there is an alternative to Yahoo and other search engines that store user data for outrageous lengths of time. Startpage doesn't collect user data for any length of time."

Albrecht, who is also the Media Spokesperson for, points out that while Yahoo is moving backwards, lawmakers are responding to consumer demands for better privacy. The Commercial Privacy Bill of Rights Act of 2011, a bipartisan bill introduced by Senators John Kerry and John McCain in April, establishes a code of conduct for gathering, storing, and using information about consumers.

"No one likes being spied on, and recent breaches of online databases are fueling calls for reform," Albrecht noted. But she believes government data regulation is not the answer. "We believe the best and only way to protect consumer data is to not collect it in the first place."

That's why Startpage offers the best privacy practices of any search engine:

  • No search records stored
  • No IP addresses recorded
  • No tracking cookies used
  • SSL (HTTPS) encryption available
  • Easy-to-use proxy service
  • Third-party certified

Startpage has earned the coveted EuroPriSe "trust mark" for outstanding privacy and data handling practices. It is also certified by Certified Secure and registered with the Dutch Data Protection Authority.

"We are rolling out the welcome mat for consumers disappointed with Yahoo's policy changes and anyone else who values their privacy and wants outstanding search results," said Albrecht. "There's no need to wait for government regulations to protect your data. We're right here already. Give us a try. We're sure you'll love us."
