Certifiably Jonathan, the new comedy mockumentary starring legendary comedian Jonathan Winters has achieved over 100,000 Facebook fans in just four months, 96% of which are age 35 and up, a testament to the power of the older generation on the internet.

We knew Jonathan Winters had a huge base of loyal fans, who he’s entertained for six decades. But, we were blown away by how many of them are actively online.

When one hears of a successful viral campaign on the internet, they usually assume it was driven by the younger demographic. But, a new force has emerged online, that of the baby boomers and seniors. Case in point is the Facebook page of the new independent mockumentary Certifiably Jonathan starring beloved comedian Jonathan Winters. Without a big studio marketing budget, the film’s Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/certifiablyjonathan achieved over 100,000 fans in just four months. The filmmakers accomplished this by tapping into the growing online presence of baby boomers and seniors, the core of Jonathan Winters’ devout fans. With some Facebook ads and a lot of interaction and updates on the Facebook page, word spread quickly.

The Certifiably Jonathan Facebook page is not just about the film, but is a place where fans express their love, gratitude and admiration for Jonathan Winters, share their Jonathan Winters memories, vote in polls such as “Who is your favorite Jonathan Winters character?” (Maude Frickert is currently in the lead), and can even join a campaign to get Jonathan Winters on Saturday Night Live. “We want to make it fun and interesting for our fans,” notes Matt Fortnow, Certifiably Jonathan executive producer, “by posting various clips and tidbits, like Jonathan Winters’ Weekly Words of Wisdom.” This week’s word of wisdom from Jonathan: “I couldn’t wait for success, so I went ahead without it.”

“We knew Jonathan Winters had a huge base of loyal fans, who he’s entertained for six decades. But, we were blown away by how many of them are actively online,” observed Certifiably Jonathan producer, Richard Marshall. It’s apparent that Facebook is not just for the younger crowd anymore. The older generation is embracing technology like never before. Added Jim Pasternak, the film’s director, “The reason for making Certifiably Jonathan was not only to indulge Jonathan Winters’ fans, who have been pining for him for so long, but to introduce him to a whole new generation.” Imagine how many fans Certifiably Jonathan will have when Generation Y discovers Jonathan Winters. They’ll see that he’s the inspiration for so many of their favorite comedians. In the meantime, the baby boomers and seniors continue to drive this train full steam ahead.
