Case in point is the Facebook page of the new independent mockumentary Certifiably Jonathan starring beloved comedian Jonathan Winters. Without a big studio marketing budget, the film’s Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/certifiablyjonathan achieved over 100,000 fans in just four months. The filmmakers accomplished this by tapping into the growing online presence of baby boomers and seniors, the core of Jonathan Winters’ devout fans. With some Facebook ads and a lot of interaction and updates on the Facebook page, word spread quickly.
The Certifiably Jonathan Facebook page is not just about the film, but is a place where fans express their love, gratitude and admiration for Jonathan Winters, share their Jonathan Winters memories, vote in polls such as “Who is your favorite Jonathan Winters character?” (Maude Frickert is currently in the lead), and can even join a campaign to get Jonathan Winters on Saturday Night Live. “We want to make it fun and interesting for our fans,” notes Matt Fortnow, Certifiably Jonathan executive producer, “by posting various clips and tidbits, like Jonathan Winters’ Weekly Words of Wisdom.” This week’s word of wisdom from Jonathan: “I couldn’t wait for success, so I went ahead without it.”
