National Public Radio recently reported that the Corn Refiners Association had petitioned the FDA for permission to change the food ingredient name “high fructose corn syrup” to “corn sugar.” The hope is that this re-naming, along with the radio and television rebranding campaign, will restore consumer confidence in an ingredient many believe is linked to obesity and other illnesses.

The Corn Refiners Association president, Audrae Erickson, was quoted by The New York Times saying, “The name is confusing, and consumers don’t understand that it has the same calories as sugar,” Erickson further explains that the name change helps consumers “better understand what’s in their food.”

Certified nutritionist Isabel De Los Rios disagrees, taking issue with the claim that HFCS is just like sugar in a recent blog post entitled Watching TV can Make You Fat. The post also covers misinformation on fiber, dairy, and the sugar alternative Splenda; however De Los Rios gives special attention to HFCS. In fact, she recorded a video clearing up some of the misleading claims in the high fructose corn syrup campaign.

In the video De Los Rios discusses the claim that HFCS is natural because it is made from corn. She explains that “there is some truth to that because HFCS does come from corn, but it goes through heavy chemical processing so it’s no longer natural.”

De Los Rios further explains how HFCS keeps dieters from losing weight, “Anytime you put something in your body that’s a toxin or a chemical it really overwhelms your liver and if your liver is overwhelmed it’s going to become very difficult for you to lose weight.”
