V23, LLC, a subsidiary of Vaught, Inc., announces the official release of the Element MDS product. This product is a totally new concept for medication disposal directed at the health care industry. The Element MDS product accepts medication, whether in solid or liquid form, and renders it undesirable. The tamper evident container can then be placed in a common trash receptacle.

“Disposal of prescription medication is becoming a major issue across the country,” says Christopher Vaught, President and CEO of Vaught, Inc. “Concerns with medications showing up in the public water supply due to the common practice of flushing unwanted medication revealed to us the need for an alternative solution for medication disposal. Through months of testing, we came up with the Element MDS product. We feel it provides the best solution to responsibly dispose of medication.”

The EPA currently recommends that unwanted medication should not be flushed down toilets because most public water filtration systems aren’t equipped to remove pharmaceuticals from the water supply. Traces of certain drugs, such as estrogen hormones from birth control, are showing up in public drinking water in various municipalities across the country. Several states, including California, now have laws prohibiting the flushing of medication due to the public water issue. Others are considering similar legislation. The EPA suggests rendering the medication undesirable and placing it into the garbage.

“The Element MDS product contains an MDS powder packet that when mixed with the medication and tap water holds the medication in suspension and forms a solid gel making the medication undesirable,” says Christopher Vaught. “The product is easy to use and the powder is harmless to handle. The process is simple and safe.”

V23, LLC is currently offering one free sample of the Element MDS product to hospice facilities across the country.

“That is where we want to start making a difference in the health care industry,” Mr. Vaught explains. “Hospice facilities have a very rigorous process of documenting and disposing of unwanted medication. They are frequently disposing of medications, including controlled substances, which must be destroyed immediately. Most facilities currently flush these medications. We feel if hospice organizations across the country start using the Element MDS product, then a great deal of medication will not end up in the public water system.”

Janett Green, Executive Director of Hospice of Southern WV, was the first hospice organization to try the Element MDS product. “Our patients and their families are increasingly aware of the issues associated with flushing medications. Many have expressed concern. Element MDS allows staff to dispose of medication in an efficient and compliant manner. Our nurses love it.”

V23, LLC makes the Element MDS product available for purchase nationwide via their online store at elementmds.com. The Element MDS product sells for $9.99 each and can be purchased in cases of 10, 20, or 40 with price discounts for higher quantities ordered. This year, V23, LLC plans to market Element MDS to other health care entities as well as individuals for home use.
