Anaheim Ends 2010 With Array Of Noteworthy Conventions

According to the Anaheim Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau (AOCVCB), convention and meeting business in the Anaheim area was on the upswing during 2010. There were 44-citywide groups (groups whose attendance reached at least 1,500) held in the Anaheim area last year. The overall convention and meeting attendance in Anaheim/Orange County, as tracked by the AOCVCB was 1,171,626 in 2010 with an economic impact of $850 million to the destination.

Of special note for 2010 was Major League Baseball’s All-Star Summer held July 9-13, 2010, with an attendance of 200,000 (120,000 at FanFest held at the Anaheim Convention Center and the Angel Stadium of Anaheim).

Additionally, Anaheim hosted a significant international incentive show, Amway China. This show was a five-wave VIP incentive event during June. It had an economic impact to the area of $10 million and the overall attendance of 13,000.

Charles Ahlers, president of the Anaheim Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau stated that, “ We finished the year strong, and as we enter 2011 with the blockbuster NAMM Show, we feel confident business is back. With the Anaheim Convention Center’s planned developments, as well as new entertainment options on the rise, we are optimistic about our area’s strong position as a premier meeting destination.”

There are currently 32-citywide groups confirmed for 2011.
Significant groups in the first six months of 2011 include:

NAMM - 90,114 (final attendance)
Medical Design and Manufacturing- 50,000 (projected attendance)
Natural Products Expo West- 60,000 (projected attendance)
Religious Education Congress- 40,000 (projected attendance)
American Chemical Society- 14,000 (projected attendance)
California Dental Association- 30,000 (projected attendance)
American Wind Energy Association- 20,000 (projected attendance)
International Dairy Deli Bakery Association- 10,000 (projected attendance)

It is estimated that 2011 convention and meeting attendance levels will be near one million.

This year’s NAMM show reported a record-breaking attendance of 90,114, representing a three percent increase from 2010 and a new attendance record for the 109-year-old show. International registration was also up two percent increase from last year to 10,400. Another sign of economic recovery in the industry, NAMM reported 1,417 exhibitors at this year’s show, including 247 new exhibitors.   “The world’s brightest minds and most innovative music companies came together in Anaheim for four amazing days of commerce, networking and learning,” said NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond.

This year’s NAMM show represents the 34th show in Anaheim and an all-time attendance record.
The show is returning next January 19-22, 2012 and will also be returning to Anaheim in 2013.
