Whole Family Health has announced that it will be opening a satellite location in the new Lucina Birth and Family Wellness Centre. Located in Edmonton’s West End, Lucina Centre is the first facility of its kind in Canada. With the goal of providing holistic care to women and their families, the centre will house a variety of care providers, allowing midwives and practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine to collaborate under one roof.

“This is an exciting opportunity to bring the two types of medicine together,” says Cecil Horwitz, registered acupuncturist and owner of Whole Family Health. “Midwives and practitioners of Eastern medicine have always worked to help women achieve the same goals in their pre- and postnatal care. We already have a great success rate in working with midwives—but until now, their patients have had to travel off-site for our services. Our being able to work together under one roof will benefit patients and the community even more.”

The wellness centre will be equipped to support women through every stage of their pregnancy from preconception until after the birth. Whole Family Health’s fertility and pregnancy specialists will offer acupuncture, massage therapy, acupressure, and natural fertility counselling. “Because it’s a birth centre, we’ll even be able to provide our services during delivery,” says Horwitz.

Acupuncture services will include prenatal treatments to prepare the body for labour, help with morning sickness and other discomfort, and quell anxieties, as well as postnatal treatments to alleviate fatigue, poor milk supply, back pain, and similar problems. When necessary, acupuncture can also assist with more serious concerns, such as avoiding miscarriage and breech presentation and alleviating postpartum depression.

Women visiting the centre will also have access to massage therapy including prenatal, induction, and postnatal massage. In addition to providing a safe, drug-free way to manage pregnancy-related conditions like sinus congestion, leg cramps, and insomnia, massage can help repair and restore the body after delivery. For women who are past their delivery due dates, Whole Family Health’s registered therapists can use techniques to naturally increase the hormones that induce labour.

The centre will include an education facility for workshops and information sessions. “With this great community space, we’ll be conducting programs on topics like gestational diabetes and nutrition for pregnancy, as well as donating time to work with teen moms,” says Horwitz. Other programs offered at Lucina Centre will cover stress reduction, mind-body meditation, acupressure for labour pain reduction, and both community-style and typical acupuncture.
