There may be nothing like the smell of newly sharpened pencils in September, but moms and dads across Canada are ushering in this new school year with ‘back to home’ purchases like never before.
Canada's leading shopping engine,Shopbot, notes a spike in searches for children's clothing, computers, backpacks and other school supplies over the last two months, as you might expect. What’s surprising is that requests for home appliances, and decoration and furniture are just as frequent, and online merchants are experiencing higher search-to-purchase conversion rates in these categories than in previous seasons.
“Summer vacation is clearly over,” says Shopbot National Sales Director Ashley Bienvenu. “As parents are readying their children for a return to school, they’re also readying themselves for more time at the house.”
Plumbing essentials, floors and desks are currently among the most popular product searches, but the trend doesn’t appear to be all about home improvement projects. Sales of bedding sets, rugs, coffee and espresso makers, and cookware also are soaring, suggesting that parents are looking to stock up on creature comforts once their studious young ones are ready for their first day.
“The cozier the item, the more popular it is, too,” says Bienvenu. “Coffee and espresso makers in particular are at the top of this list, with a sales increase of nearly 10% since the beginning of summer alone. Canadian consumers may be bracing for winter early this year, opening a larger sales window for online merchants than usual.”
