Swisslog, a leading provider of automated materials transport and medication management solutions for hospitals, today announced that North Kansas City Hospital has deployed Swisslog’s PillPick™ and BoxPicker™ in its pharmacy.

North Kansas City Hospital is the Midwest’s leader in installing advanced technology throughout the hospital. This fall, the pharmacy upgraded from an existing Homerus robot, which was installed in 2001, to Swisslog’s PillPick robot. PillPick is a fully automated robot that packages, stores and dispenses barcoded unit doses onto the patented PickRing™. With a 99.9% accuracy rate and no human touches, PillPick significantly decreases medication errors.

BoxPicker, an automated bulk storage unit, is an alternative to carousels and shelving. The three-module BoxPicker picks at a rate of three to one over typical carousels, allowing access to only a single drawer at a time in order to prevent picking errors. It will save the pharmacy staff time while increasing picking efficiency.

“The combination of PillPick and BoxPicker allows for a high percentage of our medications to be dispensed through automation,” said Pharmacy Supervisor David Hitchcock. “This will increase our efficiency, turnaround time and, ultimately, patient safety because medications are not handled by humans and come out of the robot on ready-to-dispense rings, which are verified by barcode. The streamlined PillPick/BoxPicker combination will also eliminate the need for shelf space that we needed previously, creating additional room in the pharmacy.”
