Monde Selection, the international institute in Brussels, Belgium, awarded a Grand Gold medal, the highest honor that is rarely accorded to a wine, to Canada’s Northern Ice Icewine in 2005. This was the first estate pressing of The Ice House®, a winery set in the heart of the Niagara wine making region. A year later, this small winery once again set records by winning two more Grand Gold awards for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Vintner’s Reserve Icewine.

Monde Selection is the world’s most prestigious quality selection institute and is the official judge of all wines ( produced within the European Economic Union. Its imprimatur is an indisputable symbol of quality assurance for consumers, and often provides a huge economic boost to recipient winemakers. The Grand Gold is seldom awarded in international wine contests.

“A Grand Gold is superior to Gold,” said a spokeswoman for Monde Selection. “It…means that the product awarded was unanimously recognized by the jurors as exceptional and perfect (faultless).”

“We’re thrilled,” said Jamie Macfarlane, one of Canada’s most respected winemakers and the visionary of The Ice House. “It’s like winning the Oscar. Having Northern Ice acknowledged with the most prestigious wine award in the world, confirms the extra care and attention put into our winemaking was worth the effort. The Grand Gold Award provides our international business instant credibility.”

The Ice House was established six years ago. Inside the century-old peach barn, a sophisticated Icewine-making system has been developed by Jamie Macfarlane, an “old hand” winemaker who brings perfection to his Northern Ice Icewine brand. “The Canadian environment creates better Icewine than any other place in the world” he says, “and we see it as Canada’s symbol of excellence in the wine world.” (

Northern Ice is made from grapes left on the vine, hand-picked in the dark of winter while still naturally frozen. Jamie has created the first “toasting style” of Icewine that brings an initial complex “wow” intensity of sweet fruit nectar that lingers into a crisp, clean finish. Northern Ice Vidal’s long delivery pairs well with spicy appetizers and when blended with equal parts of ice creates the most refreshing cocktail. Northern Ice contains 11.7 per cent alcohol with about 200g of residual, natural grape sugar, giving it a clean, full-bodied mouth feel with abundant aromatics: complex notes of peach and apricot and exotics notes of butterscotch and caramel.
