Chicago-based @properties has listed a Cary, Illinois home for sale at 7420 Cove Drive, that is the renowned local “Tree Sanctuary” of Walter and Teresa Moeller. For more than 25 years, the Moellers welcomed orphaned trees to their property. Located on 1.21 acres, the log home is made from hand-hewn logs and features staircases, bookcases and lamps from locally salvaged trees.
Over the years, the Moeller family collected trees as some collect toys, comic books or other trinkets. “Nearly 20 years ago when Route 14 and the Fox River Grove bridge were widened, we saved two ash and one oak tree,” says Teresa Moeller. “We have also had neighbors knock on our door to ask if we can take a tree they are going to cut down.” When a local company decided to sell its property, the family purchased the trees from the owner and planted them on the property.
The Moeller’s literally became tree huggers after learning the amount of wood used to build their log home could have built nearly 10 traditional homes. “The first thing we did was plant seeds for nearly 200 walnut trees on the property. And once those trees matured to one foot tall, a local boy scout troupe removed the saplings and transplanted them do public parks around the Cary area on Earth Day,” says Moeller.
If it is too late for the Moeller family to save trees from being cut down, they repurpose them in their log home. When Crystal Lake’s Pine Paradise began development, logs were salvaged and hand-peeled for hardwoods in the lower level of the home and two queen-size log beds were made. “My husband has also made bookcases, lamps and mirror frames from salvaged wood,” says Moeller.
While for years the Moeller family has enjoyed their custom retreat, the Cary, Illinois home is now on the market. The 4,500 square foot cabin, which is located at 7420 Cove Drive on 1.21 wooded acres, features four bedrooms, 3½ baths and a full basement.
