A newly released surgical instrument is expected to improve success rates for vasectomy reversal procedures to as high as 99 percent, said the tool’s inventor, a renowned microsurgical specialist.

Just released by Accurate Surgical and Scientific Instruments (ASSI), the new tool is known as the Marks Vas Cutting Forceps, named after its creator Dr. Sheldon Marks, founder of the International Center for Vasectomy Reversal.

“This new instrument is all about achieving the best possible chance of fatherhood for our patients,” said Dr. Marks, who has performed thousands of successful vasectomy reversals over the past two decades.

More success, more babies
A vasectomy reversal is a surgical procedure that restores the flow of sperm through the vas deferens, a long, spaghetti-like tube that carries sperm from the testicles. During the procedure, a microsurgeon uses specialized instruments, including a high-powered surgical microscope, to reconnect the multiple layers of the vas, allowing sperm to flow through again.

“While working with these highly refined microsurgical tools, I kept asking myself how we could modify the instrument we use to give men the greatest possible odds of fulfilling their dream of having a baby,” said Dr. Marks.

The unique design of his new instrument does just that, increasing the size of the opening within the vas, which means less chance for scarring and blockage, improved sperm flow, and greater chance of pregnancy.
