In the first nine months of 2011, 200 magazines launched, up from the 176 launched during the same period of 2010, according to MediaFinder.com, the largest online database of U.S. and Canadian publications. During the same period, 128 folded, up only slightly from the 127 that folded in 2010.

The top categories for new magazine launches continued to be food (25 titles) and regional interest (15 titles), with new titles such as Bitayavon and Brooklyn Magazine. Bridal magazines topped the list of ceased magazines (18 titles), due to the closing of the regional editions of Brides magazine; and regional interest (18 titles) with the closing of magazines in the 944 Media publishing group.

“These new regional magazines are targeted to neighborhoods such as Brooklyn, or smaller cities such as Greensboro, NC (O. Henry magazine), highlighting a continued interest in everything local,” said Trish Hagood, president of MediaFinder.com. “In addition, other new categories of magazines continued to launch, such as Social Media Monthly, the first magazine to cover social media exclusively. And, HGTV Magazine, the largest magazine launch of the year, will hit the newsstands on Oct. 4.”

Among business-to-business magazines, 56 titles launched during the same period, with the “business & industry” category showing the most growth. At the same time, 34 b-to-b magazines folded, with nursing publications experiencing the biggest decline with nine titles, due to the consolidation of regional editions by Merion Matters, Inc.
