2011 LAI Award Winners Announced

Lambda Alpha International honors two recipients in their annual awards program.

Lambda Alpha International (LAI) announced today two recipients of LAI International Awards. The awards honor achievements in the field of land economics. This year’s winners come from a variety of backgrounds and represent the highest standard in our industry. They are:

International Member of the Year: Helen Sause
The highest honor that LAI bestows on one of its members, Helen Sause is being recognized for her outstanding work over a nearly 40-year period and her contributions to the field of land economics. Mrs. Sause was the Deputy Executive Director for Program and Project Management of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, and was the Agency’s Project Director for the Yerba Buena Center Redevelopment Project Area. In all, she served with the Agency for 34 years. Mrs. Sause oversaw the implementation of the Agency’s thirteen active redevelopment project areas and projects in all redevelopment survey areas throughout the City of San Francisco. Ms. Sause was a Founding Director of the Yerba Buena Alliance, the non-profit advocacy organization. Since retiring in 2003, Mrs. Sause has participated on a number of boards and related activities. She previously served as the Editor of LAI’s newsletter, KeyNotes; and now serves as Assistant Editor. Mrs. Sause regularly participates in LAI’s Land Economics Weekends; and remains active in her local Golden Gate Chapter on their Board and Nomination Committee.

International Urban Affairs Award: Hal Bastian
Hal Bastian, Senior Vice President & Director of Economic Development, Downtown Center Business Improvement District, Los Angeles, California, is being recognized for a decade of tireless efforts to revitalize the downtown city center by fostering thousands of new residences, businesses and a renewed sense of urban vitality that is transforming the city for the 21st Century. Mr. Bastian has been responsible for overseeing the business and residential recruitment efforts for the organization furthering the goal of establishing the Downtown Center Business Improvement District as the location of choice for business and residential urban living in Los Angeles. Mr. Bastian created and leads a series of downtown tours to recruit commercial and residential real estate investors, lenders, office tenants, retailers, restaurants and residents to the central city. The tenor of the downtown experience has changed markedly in that decade in large measure because of the tireless efforts of Mr. Bastian.

LAI Award winners will be recognized at the LAI Biennial Dinner on October 22, 2011 at The Sutter Club, Sacramento, California.
