The things we buy should be as beautiful and well made as possible, according to the founders of a new online design magazine and shopping site.
Jordan Sitkin and Polo Valdovinos are co-founders of http://www.decurate.com, a weekly site with interviews and stories of people in various design and creative fields, including furniture, art, music and jewelry.
"Craftsmanship was something common to ordinary things," says Mr. Valdovinos, "everything from a Wedgewood stove to mid century modern furniture was made with a high level of quality and thoughtful design. These are still being used and appreciated decades later."
Mr. Sitkin and Mr. Valdovinos promote designers and products from the United States and abroad. They are currently traveling in South and Latin America. Operations and logistics are handled by a team in California.
Among the places they've discovered emerging designers is Chile. Mr. Valdovinos adds, "we're finding great design everywhere we go. Santiago has a small but incredibly strong network of talented designers creating modern objects with traditional materials and techniques."
The premiere issue of http://www.decurate.com features three independent designers. Products include exotic claro walnut tables, origami style light fixtures and porcelain objects inspired by North American wildlife.
