NASA Spacesuits Inspire New Adult Diaper for Incontinence

The CareGiver Partnership, a national retailer of home healthcare products, has partnered with Unique Wellness to offer adult diapers developed with the same technology used in NASA suits worn during spacewalks.

Inspired by superabsorbent, adult diapers provided to astronauts during space shuttle missions, Unique Wellness has created an incontinence brief that only needs to be changed three times per day. The CareGiver Partnership is now offering the Wellness Brief in its online store.

In creating maximum-absorbency garments for space shuttle missions, NASA developed a polymer capable of absorbing up to 60 times its own volume. Using this technology, Unique Wellness has created the Wellness Brief — a drier, healthier, more environmentally friendly option.

“Because the brief is designed to be worn for eight hours between changes, it’s ideal for travel, overnight use and discreet daytime wear,” says Lynn Wilson, Founder of The CareGiver Partnership. “The most absorbent diaper we offer, the Wellness Brief absorbs up to 87 ounces of fluid and pulls it away from the skin.”

Wilson says keeping skin dry — along with cleansing, moisturizing and protecting with products formulated for managing incontinence — is the key to preventing irritation and infection.

“With only three changes needed per day, vs. seven with ordinary briefs, the Wellness Brief is more cost-effective and requires less caregiver attention,” says Wilson. “They’re better for the environment too, reducing landfill use because of fewer product changes.”
