Online travel agent ZUJI Australia’s (http://www.zuji.com.au) latest travel figures show Aussies are more than just fair weather Wallabies supporters…most of the time.
Managing director of ZUJI Australia, James Gaskell, says they are seeing large surges in travel to New Zealand before Wallabies games.
“In the three days prior to each Australian game, we are seeing Trans-Tasman departures increase by more than 50% on what we would normally expect. The only exception was following Australia’s embarrassing loss to Ireland, which saw booking numbers dip to figures pre World Cup,” says Gaskell.
It also seems a lot of supporters are in no rush to plan ahead. Gaskell says: “We’ve had a surprisingly large number of eleventh hour bookings; there are plenty of us who are happy jet off to catch a game at a moment's notice. We think this may be because flights and hotels aren’t nearly as expensive as many people were predicting.”*
ZUJI’s results also showed a lot of support for the New Zealand, South Africa, England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales teams, with travel in the three days prior to any of these games up by more than 30%.
Good news for the New Zealand Tourism Board as people visiting during the World Cup are also opting to stay longer. ZUJI is reporting a five day increase in the average length of stay, rising from 9.8 days to 15.1 days.
