A more effective licensing program will help maintain a high-quality Indiana educator workforce as we prepare students for the demands of more rigorous academic standards.
Indianapolis (PRWEB) October 06, 2011
Today the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) awarded Pearson a contract to develop and administer the Indiana educator licensing testing program. In 2010, the IDOE selected Pearson as its partner for developing new teacher standards to support its shift to a content-focused approach to teacher licensure. Together, IDOE and Pearson’s Evaluation Systems group developed comprehensive, rigorous teacher standards, which included making Indiana the first state in the nation to align its teacher standards with the Common Core State Standards.
“It is no secret that great teachers are the most important factor in determining student academic success,” said Dr. Tony Bennett, Superintendent of Public Instruction. “A more effective licensing program will help maintain a high-quality Indiana educator workforce as we prepare students for the demands of more rigorous academic standards.”
Evaluation Systems will collaborate with the IDOE to develop the state’s new teacher licensing testing program, which will include tests in five developmental areas and over 50 content areas. Evaluation Systems will also develop a test that teacher preparation programs may use to assess their candidates’ essential skills in reading, writing and mathematics.
Of the continued partnership with IDOE, Dr. William Gorth, President of Pearson’s Evaluation Systems group, said, “We are proud to have the opportunity to build on our work helping Indiana become the first state to align its teacher standards to the new Common Core State Standards, setting a high bar for teacher quality throughout the state.”
Evaluation Systems has more than three decades of experience developing, administering and scoring tests for prospective teachers in the United States and, through its custom work for states, has created teacher certification tests for more than 100 content fields, professional teaching skills, educational leadership, and college-level reading, writing and mathematics skills.
