As many remodeling contractors already know, the EPA has issued a law requiring the use of lead-safe work practices aimed at preventing lead poisoning.

The Basics: Effective April 22, 2010, contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects for compensation that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools that were built before 1978, had be EPA certified and follow specific lead safe work practices. The EPA "Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule" (RRP) is a federal law that affects anyone who disturbs painted surfaces where lead may be present.

This includes, but is not limited to:
General Contractors
Demolition Contractors
Remodeling Contractors
Window Installers
Siding Installers
Painters Plumbers
HVAC Contractors
Abatement Contractors
Maintenance workers for multi-family housing units etc.

Enforcement from the EPA began slowly but is now gaining speed. The EPA has issued fines to contractors from many parts of the country.
