Decernis Receives New Patent for System and Method to Index Foods, Chemicals, and Commodities in Documents and Databases

Decernis LLC (http://www.decernis.com) announced today the award of a new patent for an indexing system and method to identify and validate chemicals, foods, and commodities in documents and databases. This innovation enables a user to find any reference to a food, chemical, or contaminant in any language across the Internet. A material covered by the patent includes a chemical, formulation, biological product, any virus, therapeutic serum, toxin, antitoxin, or analogous product, and finished article. The patent awarded to Decernis LLC is US 8,037,018, issued on October 11, 2011.

The invention addresses a need to be able to accurately identify and index chemicals, foods, and commodities across language and in any document or database. The safety of products in the supply chain depends upon such identification – whether foods and food ingredients, such as food additives, consumer products, such as toys, or raw materials, such as chemicals. When a new scientific study or a new regulation is published that identifies particular substances, foods, or contaminants of concern, it is very difficult today to cross-reference such terms in a fast, accurate, and common way regardless of language.

A need also exists to be able to compare the ingredients and raw materials stored in enterprise product management systems to newly published regulations and scientific developments that may apply. The Decernis indexing system makes this possible.

One Decernis service based on the patented invention is Decernis News. Decernis News and Issue Management is a global alerting and management system for regulatory and scientific developments that apply to global product safety. Decernis News uses the patented indexing system to dynamically identify substances, commodities, and contaminants referenced in regulations and scientific publications. The system is a collaboration platform for the client’s compliance team and can be integrated into the client’s enterprise product management system. It is updated daily.

Another service of Decernis that uses the patented indexing system is gComply Plus. gComply Plus is an enterprise system either hosted or deployed to the client’s servers that uses expert rule logic to prepare an evaluation of components and products and whether they comply with global requirements for specific applications. gComply Plus produces a product certification document based upon the evaluation made of the product formulation. gComply Plus also provides for change management.

“We are very pleased to receive this new patent, which recognizes our commitment to improving technologies for compliance management. The indexing system opens up a new capability for transparency of scientific and regulatory publications across language as they relate to specific substances, commodities, and other materials. Our close relationship with our clients in forty-six countries around the world makes this possible.” said Andrew (Pat) Waldo, CEO of Decernis.

Decernis LLC with its headquarters in Washington, D.C. and global operations and subsidiary organizations provides information systems and content for global food, consumer, and industrial product safety. The company tracks developments in more than one hundred and thirty countries. Its clients include governmental agencies such as FDA, EFSA, and OECD; food and consumer product manufacturers; raw material manufacturers; law firms; and laboratories. The company’s value-added systems integrate with leading supply chain management systems.
