About the Author
Ashanti Ruffin, a native of Suffolk, Virginia, is in her eleventh year of teaching chemistry at Lakeland High School. For the past seven years, her classes have high performances on their end-of-course Virginia SOL (Standards of Learning) Assessments. Also, her achievement gap has been within 5%in all reporting categories.
In 2007, in recognition of outstanding performance, she was the recipient of the Crystal Apple Award. She was also the recipient of the 2007–2008 Teacher of the Year Award. Currently, as a classroom teacher, she recognizes the continuous opposition students face in the class each year. During the past 2 years, she has focused on creating an at-home interactive tutorial system for challenging math and science courses. Mrs. Ruffin is married and has two sons: a fourth and an eighth grader. She is a 1999 Norfolk State University honor graduate with a BS degree in chemistry and is a certified and highly qualified educator.
