StyleJam (http://stylej.am), a Seattle based startup, is opening its platform to the web design community. The platform is a service targeted to web designers in need of a portfolio that is at the same time fully customizable and easy to maintain.
StyleJam was born at the beginning of 2011 out of the frustration of three web developers based in United States and Italy about the state of affairs in managing and crafting their personal web design portfolios.
Up until now, web designers have had two options to put their portfolios online. The first one is to spend money and especially energies to handcraft, host and maintain their portfolios. This way they can show their real talent and skills, but they must invest a lot of time and resources. The other one is to use a hosted solution that offers almost no customization and creative freedom: much easier to maintain and less time consuming but suboptimal in convincing potential customers.
StyleJam works by fetching personal data about the designer from the most prominent social networks, then asks some informations about his business, like for example his price tag. Using those informations StyleJam can generate an HTML document that is ready to be worked on by the designer. What powers the customization system of StyleJam are the same technologies that form the skeleton of the internet, HTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). The designer will need to use the same skills he employs during his work day to customize his own portfolio because it is a real, personal mini site, not some prebuilt template, and works exactly as a normal website.
When the portfolio has been generated, maintenance becomes a breeze, the only thing the web designer needs to do is update his data using our backend, and the portfolio will be recreated with the same design.
StyleJam has been carefully crafted to successfully combine the best qualities of two worlds: hand-crafted portfolios and platform hosted portfolios. Web designers can register and host their portfolios for free, and pay later for additional services.
