New York, NY (PRWEB) October 13, 2011
The learning company Pearson congratulates Julie Young, president and CEO, Florida Virtual School (FLVS), on receiving the 2011 McGraw Prize in Education. The McGraw Prize in Education annually recognizes outstanding individuals who have dedicated themselves to education innovation.
Young is nationally renowned for her pioneering work in digital education and as the founder of FLVS, a public school free to all Florida students. In addition, as the result of a private-public partnership launched with Pearson nearly a year ago, FLVS’s more than 125 courses are also available to all students around the country through Pearson Virtual Learning powered by Florida Virtual School.
Pearson School CEO Peter Cohen said, “One of the reasons that we chose to partner with Florida Virtual School to expand our virtual learning offerings was Julie’s vision and leadership in the world of digital education. We congratulate her for this prestigious, well-deserved recognition and look forward to her future work leveraging the power of technology to revolutionize education and improve learning for all students.”
In a white paper, co-authored by this year’s McGraw award recipients, Young shared her insight into how online learning enhances and strengthens the human connections that facilitate learning.
Online courses allow students to benefit from connected learning environments despite geographic distance,” said Young. “The greatest joy is to see a student who has had limited success in their previous learning environment come alive with confidence as they experience the one on one, success driven model that FLVS provides. When you remove the barriers of space and time and eliminate the peer pressure, the students actually learn to believe in themselves again.”
