For the second year in a row, students at the Centre for Musical Minds music school in Frisco, TX have produced two extremely talented and hard-working students who won their respective divisions at the local level. Also for the second year in a row, the centre has students represented at the national level. Students enjoy the Roland Piano Festival because it takes a level of artistry and creativity to make their music come to life. Skold said, “I thought it was really cool to play on a piano that sounded like a whole orchestra! It was fun picking out different instruments and sounds that would make my piece sound good.” With castanets, mariachi trumpets, and horses galloping in the background, Linnea Skold truly added some Spanish flair to the afternoon.
This year’s local Roland Piano Festival was held at Romeo Music in Dallas on September 24th where there were three competitive divisions. Beginning at 9am was Division 3, students aged 13 - 18. The most participants could be found in Division 2, students aged 9 - 12, which began at 10:30am. Kaci Pelias of the Centre for Musical Minds won with a show-stopping performance of Great Balls of Fire, which was preceded by a soothing Claire de Lune introduction. Pelias also won 2nd place for talent in the state-level Cinderella pageant this summer, performing for her largest audience yet. Last but not least, Division 1 began at 1:30 in the afternoon and was comprised of 1st-4th graders and 2nd grader Linnea Skold of the Centre for Musical Minds, took home the winning trophy with her performance of Spanish Caballero by Nancy Faber.
Students were judged based upon use of the Roland RM-700 flagship keyboard, their technical artistry, notational accuracy and musicality. Pelias said about her experience,“I enjoyed working with the Roland because all the sounds together resembled an orchestra or a big band. I loved listening to everyone's songs at the festival because of how beautiful they were!”
