Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 26, 2011
The Circle of Care Foundation (“COCF”) announced today the successful completion of its First Annual “The Ultimate Trunk Show,” which was held on October 20th, where actor and motivational speaker J.R. Martinez was presented with the “Spirit of Hope” award. The award was created to honor burn survivors who inspire others with their actions. Since being burned while serving as a United States Army infantryman in the Iraq war in 2003, Martinez has dedicated himself to taking his message of resilience and optimism to burn survivors struggling to cope with their injuries.
Linda David, CEO stated, “The event far surpassed even my grandest vision for the evening. Nearly 500 people passed through Mercedes-Benz of Beverly Hills to sample incredible appetizers generously donated by the Grill on The Alley. The wine dinner that followed was sold out. Catered by the Grill on The Alley, and featuring boutique vineyards, diners were lead by Scott Torrance, Vice President at Christie’s, through pairings created just for the Ultimate Trunk Show.”
Dr. Peter H. Grossman of the Grossman Burn Centers was joined by Martinez's Dancing with the Stars partner, Karina Smirnoff, to present Martinez with the Spirit of Hope Award. Also attending were the actor David Arquette, television personality Carson Kressley, actress Kate Linder, Maksim and Valentin Chmerchovskiy from Dancing with the Stars, and Beverly Hills Mayor Barry Brucker, Police Chief David Snowden and City Treasurer Eliot Finkel.
Dr. Grossman said: “J.R. Martinez is an inspiring figure, a true hero who served his country and now offers hope to all burn survivors worldwide. His quiet discipline and optimistic attitude remind us of his bravery and courage. The entire evening was an unforgettable moment, highlighted by the strength of J.R. Martinez.”
Sponsored by Mercedes-Benz of Beverly Hills, “The Ultimate Trunk Show” was a holiday boutique and reception where luxury vendors displayed their items—literally—in the trunks of new, top-of-the line Mercedes-Benz vehicles. In addition to the boutique, the event featured a wine tasting and dinner, hosted by Christies Vice President, Scott Torrance, and catered by the Grill On The Alley.
Martinez who is known for his television roles on All My Children and Dancing with the Stars, suffered burns to more than 40% of his body in a roadside bomb attack while serving in Iraq in 2003. Throughout the course of his 34-month recovery, he endured 33 different surgeries. It was during this recovery that he discovered his gift for encouraging and counseling burn survivors. Since that time, Martinez has become a sought-after motivational speaker and dedicated himself tirelessly to helping the burn community.
COCF provides assistance to burn survivors and their families. In addition to its close ties to the renowned Grossman Burn Centers, which it supports through direct patient assistance and other programs, COCF is expanding its programs and its reach to include all of Southern California.
