PreK-3 school students explore lifetime wellness strategies in a music-rich, animated education environment. Lively Q&A and hit songs engage classroom learners in individual and group activities, while cross-curricular activities teach valuable life skills in health, language arts, music, science and social-emotional learning (SEL) in this 3-volume DVD teaching tool from Pennie Sempell & Company.

Pennie Sempell & Company today announced the release of the Healthier Happier Life Skills Classroom Edition, an interactive three-DVD set that uses music and an engaging call-in radio show format to teach students in grades preK-3 strategies for maintaining physical, social, and emotional health.

Using this new research-based approach, students explore wellness strategies for a lifetime in a fun, music-rich, animated environment. Lively Q&A and hit songs engage learners in individual and group activities, while standards-based, cross-curricular activities teach valuable life skills in the areas of health, language arts, music, science and social-emotional learning (SEL).

The single-package Healthier Happier Life Skills Classroom Edition includes three DVD volumes—Health, Happiness and Relationships—containing a total of 31 “radio show” episodes and more than 15 hours of related interactive, standards-based activities. These are packaged with extensive teacher support materials, including:

  •     A Quick Start Guide
  •     A Video Tour to familiarize teachers with format and operation
  •     A 100-page Teacher Guide
  •     Classroom and Take-Home Worksheets

“Research tells us that children need an early grounding in physical, emotional and social health in order to build happy, healthy and successful lives,” says developer Pennie Sempell. “I’ve created the Healthier Happier Life Skills Classroom Edition to address the lack of classroom tools in this area and to help teachers incorporate these important concepts into the curriculum. And to engage students in learning, I’ve incorporated fun animations and wonderful songs from Broadway and beyond.”

Sempell, an integrative health therapist and wellness educator, has spent more than 20 years helping people achieve greater wellness and develop self-help strategies that address a wide spectrum of challenges. She collaborates with doctors at a major San Francisco medical center to provide mind-body therapies, energy medicine therapies, and wellness education for adults and children.
Her Healthier Happier Life Skills Classroom Edition introduces students to the interrelationship of essential life skills, such as

  •     cultivating gratitude and kindness
  •     awareness of the five senses
  •     self-relaxation
  •     coping with stress
  •     managing negative feelings
  •     listening and communicating
  •     the importance of fitness, sleep, and nutrition

The lessons, developed by teachers, increase in sophistication throughout the series, helping students improve their thought processes and skills while engaging them with music and song. The result is “a beautiful work of love that will make a big difference for those children fortunate enough to have a teacher who uses it,” says Jean Wells, accessibility expert at California State University.

Detailed lesson plans, based on the California Department of Health Education definition of health as “a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being,” support the health curriculum every week for a full school year. Teachers can meet a range of curriculum needs with cross-curricular activities in health, language arts, music, science, and social-emotional learning (SEL), supported by detailed correlations to national health, language arts, science and arts standards. “There are so many choices around each lesson,” says Pamela Heck, a special education teacher in Sebastopol, California. “You can focus on science or arts or health, and the state standards are very clearly defined.”

The lessons are appropriate for a range of learners, including special needs, ELL, and struggling students who may need additional support with language arts development. The songs help reinforce phonics concepts, familiarize children with high-frequency sight words, and engage every child in learning.
