Nation’s leading homebuilder selects OpenDNS to protect corporate network and employees from malware and Internet threats.

OpenDNS Enterprise allows us to not only filter out unsavory content but more importantly ensure that malware and botnets can’t get onto our network and wreak havoc

OpenDNS, the world's largest and fastest-growing provider of Internet security and DNS services that deliver a safer, faster and more intelligent Internet experience to everyone, today announced Shea Homes is using OpenDNS as part of a layered strategy to prevent malware and other Internet threats at locations throughout North Carolina. Shea Homes, one of the nation’s largest civil construction contractors and home builders, also leverages OpenDNS Enterprise content filtering as part of a comprehensive strategy to protect against malware and botnets.

Prior to deploying OpenDNS Enterprise, Shea Homes was using an M86 hardware solution that dominated the company’s IT resources. The appliance system required a considerable amount of datacenter space, energy resources and management and consisted of different devices for filtering, reporting, and data storage. The Shea Homes IT Team was searching for a solution that would allow them to downsize their data center and maximize resources while at the same time upgrading to the most innovative technology.

Shea Homes selected OpenDNS Enterprise because the cloud-based solution instantly freed up the company’s IT resources, as it required no up-front capital investment and maintenance fees or dedicated training and management assets. In addition to the unique malware-prevention technology OpenDNS Enterprise offers, Shea Homes also leverages OpenDNS Enterprise content filtering, which prevents users from visiting less scrupulous websites that may carry malware or other infectious threats and ensures Internet traffic at its 12 North Carolina locations is business-focused.

“While it’s important for us to keep our employees on a business track while at the office, the biggest threat in today’s IT security world is malware. OpenDNS Enterprise allows us to not only filter out unsavory content but more importantly ensure that malware and botnets can’t get onto our network and wreak havoc,” said Shea Homes IT Director Steve Rilee.

Shea Homes chose to deploy OpenDNS Enterprise as part of a comprehensive strategy to transition their IT program to the most cutting-edge technology, rooted in cloud-based platforms. Deploying OpenDNS helps ensure the company remains advantaged in its position as a recognized technological leader.

“I turned over every rock – twice – to see what we can cut or trim without compromising security or quality,” Rilee continued. “OpenDNS Enterprise allowed us to continue on our mission to being on the technological cutting-edge while at the same time making great advances in our cost-savings efforts.”

Since deploying OpenDNS Enterprise, The Shea Homes IT team has been able to view in-depth reporting on the threats that OpenDNS Enterprise defends against by using the dashboard tools and analytics. Rilee can view insights for each of the 12 locations he manages, and instantly modify filtering settings in response to traffic trends. Rilee adds that he’d recommend OpenDNS Enterprise to, “anyone looking for a cost-effective solution that just plain works.”

OpenDNS Enterprise is also used by Shea Homes’ parent company J.F. Shea Co. After deploying OpenDNS Enterprise, J.F. Shea Co. Senior Network Engineer Francis Vergel de Dios reported a savings the company $25,000 and hours of work each week for his team.
