New Poetry book to be featured at this year’s New York Library Association Book Exhibit

Author Waverly Sinclaire Howard transforms his observations of life to verse as he shares with readers “Pieces of My Mind 2nd Edition”. Made available through Xlibris, this insightful collection of poetry is inspired by his interrelations with man, family, and society.

Filled with a gamut of themes that range from personal and familial relationships to reaction to electoral politics, this compilation reflects the author’s personal reactions and responses to social and political events in his life. According to Howard, his feelings and anger are best found in Shakespeare's Hamlet: “What a piece of work is man!”

A commentary reflecting his disappointment with man and his lack of humanity towards others, this book features poems such as “Spaced Out” where he writes “I have watched in sadness, very close to madness / At the way relations are today. / Out of a foolish greed for what they think they need / The sexes go their separate way.” From being a part of a complex society, the author makes readers aware of his more personal thoughts about family in “To My Three Children,” “Weekend Game With My Young Son,” and “To My Grown and Growing Children.” These and more reflective poetry await readers in this collection.

This collection of poems was written during a period covering 1976 to the present. They are, by in large, angry observations of the author’s surroundings and loving pieces of dedication to his family.

“Pieces of My Mind 2nd Edition” will be featured at the New York Library Association Book Exhibit in Saratoga Springs, NY on November 2-5, 2011. For more information on this book, interested parties may log on to http://www.Xlibris.com.

About the Author
Waverly Sinclair Howard is a lifelong New York City resident. He was born in Central Harlem in November of 1929, the year of the Great Wall Street crash. He lived through the Great Depression of the 1930-1940s. His maternal grandparents raised him, along with his deserted teenage mother.

Like many children of that era, he began working at nine years of age selling newspapers and shining shoes. Since then, he has held many jobs: U.S. Postal worker, Field Interviewer and Lab Manager for the Research wing of the New York Blood Center, Forensic Social Worker for the Criminal Defense Unit of the Legal Aid Society, Special Education teacher, and New York City Firefighter.

Though this is his first book of poetry, he began writing poems in the 6th grade. His first poem was a Mother’s Day greeting to his beloved maternal grandmother. After a decade’s long silence, he resumed writing in 1976 while living in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
