Better health literacy yields benefits for payers, providers, and patients

Dr. Laura Andrade, EdD, Director of Education Services at Hayes, Inc., will be the featured guest on the October 21, 2011, radio broadcast of Life Love & Health hosted by Christopher Springmann. Dr. Andrade will discuss how an improvement in health literacy and health communication is an essential component in improving individual and public health.

“In simple terms, health literacy is the ability to obtain, understand, and use healthcare information in ways that will improve one’s health,” says Dr. Andrade. “Poor health literacy is a huge problem in the United States healthcare system. Fortunately, health literacy is now the focus of unprecedented attention from government officials, hospitals, and insurers. Stakeholders recognize that improving health literacy and health communication in general is one part of the solution to the crisis facing our healthcare system with regard to managing limited resources while insuring that every patient receives high-quality care.”

Dr. Andrade holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Doctorate in Education. At Hayes, Dr. Andrade provides consulting services to the healthcare industry, and she creates and delivers educational seminars for healthcare professionals.
