Santa Cruz, CA (PRWEB) October 21, 2011
On Saturday October 22nd, 2011, CrossFit West Santa Cruz (http://www.crossfitwest.com/) will host the 3rd annual Santa Cruz CrossFit Affiliate Cup. Athletes from the county’s five CrossFit gyms will gather to compete with over 150 people in 5 divisions for the title of “Fittest in the County”.
CrossFit, a fitness routine that is sweeping the nation as the largest growing sector of the exercise industry, combines various attributes of fitness to produce an overall athlete. Conceived by Greg Glassman and founded as a single gym in Santa Cruz over 10 years ago, CrossFit has grown to over 3000 gyms worldwide and the organization recently teamed up with Reebok to bring the CrossFit Games in to the national spotlight by broadcasting it on ESPN2 – making CrossFit one of Santa Cruz’s most successful recent exports.
Cliff Hodges, co-owner of the hosting gym CrossFit West Santa Cruz describes the event on October 22nd as “a miniature CrossFit Games; with all the excitement of fierce competition, music, vendors, media, announcers, and spectator fan-fair that one would experience in a world class sporting event right here in Santa Cruz. We wanted to give the CrossFit members of Santa Cruz a taste of what it’s like to compete in The [CrossFit] Games”. In the spirit of the CrossFit tradition to prepare their athletes for the “unknown and unknowable”, 2 out of 3 events have been announced containing fitness challenges that involve running, heavy Olympic Weightlifting, gymnastics, and other demanding tests. While the third and final event will remain secret until the day of the competition.
Hodges’ business partner and founder of CrossFit West Santa Cruz, Sam Radetsky, has been a fitness and martial arts trainer for over 10 years and describes “infinite scalability” as one of the key tenets of CrossFit: “CrossFit really is for anyone – from 18 year-old MMA fighters to 70 year-old grandparents, that’s the beauty of the program. No matter what your level, we can make CrossFit safe yet challenging for you; this is what is so cool about these competitions and The CrossFit Games. It’s like watching a professional sporting event that you can actually relate to because we do all the same movements with our everyday clients in the gym. The movements might be scaled down, you might be using a hollow PVC pipe instead of a heavy barbell, but the movements and the workouts are the same.”
The 3rd annual Santa Cruz CrossFit Affiliate Cup will take place at CrossFit West Santa Cruz, 350 Coral St, Santa Cruz, CA 95060 from 8am – 3pm on October 22nd, 2011. Spectators are welcome and admission is free. For more information on CrossFit and the event, visit http://www.crossfitwest.com or call 800-726-XFIT.
