Hewlett-Packard Singapore (HP Singapore) and Microsoft Singapore have once again topped the competition by taking 15 out of 40 available categories in the 16th edition of the Computerworld Singapore Readers Choice Awards (RCA). Commonly acknowledged as the ‘Oscars of the Singapore IT industry’, the awards were presented on October 21 at Raffles Hotel Singapore.
All told, the lion’s share of the awards went to HP Singapore with eight awards; and Microsoft Singapore with seven. Other star performers were: Cisco Systems with four awards; SAP, and Symantec Corporation with three each; and, EMC Corporation, SAS Institute and SingTel with two each.
The honour roll also includes: APC by Schneider Electric, Apple, Blue Coat Systems, Check Point Software Technologies, CommScope, Dell, Fortinet, NetApp and VMware.
The Awards go to vendors, products, services or solution families that score the highest in the areas of price, performance, feature sets, reliability and ease of use. Computerworld Singapore readers do the actual evaluation and then participate in an online survey.
Every year, Fairfax Business Research, the research arm of Fairfax Business Media, conducts the awards survey on behalf of Computerworld Singapore, following industry best practices to deliver statistically valid results from the country’s qualified information and communication executives, including Computerworld Singapore readers.
There are altogether 40 categories divided into eight award sections: Communications, Enterprise Applications, Hardware, Platform and Tools, Security, Services, Storage and Virtualisation. In total, there were close to 1,000 product and service contenders for the Awards this year.
HP Singapore’s wins were in the following categories: Consulting and Integration Services Provider; Desktop Virtualisation Solutions Provider; High-End Enterprise Servers; Mid-Range Servers; Mobile Computers; Storage Virtualisation Solutions; Support and Maintenance Services Provider; and, System Management Software.
Microsoft Singapore’s were in: Application Server Software; Collaboration Platform; Database Management System; Enterprise Content Management; IT Asset Management System and Service Oriented Architecture Services Provider; and, Unified Communications Software Suite.
Cisco Systems won in the following categories: Enterprise Routers and Switches; Intrusion Detection/ Prevention System; Unified Communications Hardware; and, Wireless Routers.
SAP took the following categories: Customer Relationship Management, Enterprise Resource Planning, and Supply Chain Management.
And Symantec Corporation took the Backup Software, E-mail Archiving System, and Information Security Suite categories.

Mark Hobson, Asia Regional Manager, Fairfax Business Media, hailed the efforts made by every award winner, and praised their perseverance in standing alongside their customers through difficult times.
“In the last three tough years, organisations in the public and private sectors have been up against a brick wall, constantly at odds with shrinking budgets and staff reductions,” he said. “Displaying creativity and downright guts, these leading technology vendors and service providers have helped their customers ‘do more with even less.’ Indeed, they have pushed that notion to almost miraculous and heroic limits.”
Equally impressed was Jack Loo, Editor, Computerworld Singapore. With reference to the theme of this year’s RCA programme–‘Celebrate the Superhero of the Year’–he said: “The award winners are superheroes for their customers. They demonstrated great fortitude and loyalty to their customers in the past year with the technologies and services they delivered. They stood up, reached out and helped their customers get increasingly more value from their IT budgets.”
