The authors tested North American birds exploiting novel food sources or inventing new foraging techniques. Their results suggest that although innovators use a wider variety of habitats, they are not necessarily diet generalists, challenging the classic view that feeding generalism is equivalent to feeding flexibility. Another article focuses on the evolution of cooperation in animal societies. It argues that kin selection is a critical evolutionary process, with cooperation evolving principally among relatives living in kin-structured populations.

One of the most recently included articles in Sciencia.org's Environment Sciences Category covers the persistence of brevetoxin in sediments and seagrass epiphytes of east Florida coastal waters. The study investigates the development of brevetoxins after a bloom of Karenia brevis in September 2007 near Jacksonville, Florida and shows that brevetoxins can persist in marine ecosystems in the absence of sustained blooms and in sediments where seagrass communities are absent. Another article investigates a marine bacterium producing protein with algicidal activity against harmful algae and highlights the role of some bacteria controlling harmful algal bloom (HAB).
