Cornell says in God Moments that there are days and then there are days-perhaps only one or two in a life time-that can lead one to the brink of genuine disaster. Days when words like honor, duty and responsibility cause fear, stick in the throat and leave permanent scars on memories. Days that expose who is truly up to the task of living well and uprightly.

As the doctor told us Mandy was retarded and had cerebral-palsey a distressing admission the world was not as I thought began settling on my soul. A sudden awareness I controlled nothing detonated a panicked urge to run away or go back in time.

In his new book, God Moments, Oklahoma author, David Cornell, describes how, back in 1977, he and his wife were sitting in a hospital waiting room listening to the doctor tell them that their beautiful, blue-eyed, blond-haired 11-month-old girl, Mandy, was severely mentally delayed and had cerebral palsy.

“In the pain of that moment,” says Cornell, “I silently raged against God. I cried and felt nothing would ever be the same. I was a failure. I could not fix my little girl. And all I could do was keep asking myself, why would God let this happen to us?

“On the drive back home, my wife held Mandy in her arms, cooing at her and telling her that nothing had changed, and that she was still our beloved daughter. In that moment, I saw God at work. He quieted my raging heart and reminded me about unconditional love.”

For years, Cornell has been writing about and speaking about his “God Moments” -- those times in his life when he becomes acutely aware of God’s presence in his life.

Cornell says, “Most of us feel God’s presence during the big, traumatic events of our lives. The challenge is to become more aware of God’s presence in the little quiet moments, for it is only when we become capable of being still that we can truly come to know Him. I wrote God Moments to help people think harder about the nature of love, forgiveness, faith and responsibility, and to prayerfully consider their own walk with God.”

Cornell started his journey with God forty years ago as a seventeen-year-old high school student and has been married thirty-seven years. He received a BA in Sociology from Oklahoma Baptist University, a Masters in Sociology from the University of Oklahoma and has worked in the field of child abuse for the past seventeen years.
