We have a significant commitment to technology development on behalf our our clients. This addition to our patent portfolio underscores that commitment.

Swisslog, a leading provider of automated materials transport and medication management solutions for hospitals, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued patent number 7,950,879 for its systems and methods of controlling the speed of carriers in a pneumatic tube system (PTS).

A carrier is a reusable polycarbonate container that holds and protects small medical items sent through a PTS.

The patent, entitled "Variable Speed Drive for Pneumatic Transport System,” protects the systems and methods Swisslog uses to control the amount of energy transferred from the pneumatic tube system to a carrier and, hence, its contents. The patent-protected technologies vary the speed of a carrier as it passes through the PTS. Such varying of the velocity allows for reducing the total forces applied to the carrier, thereby protecting the sensitive items such as lab samples or medications often sent through the PTS. One method, for example, adjusts the power output of a power source connected to a compressor device.

“Swisslog is pleased the U.S. Patent Office has again recognized the creative and innovative aspects of our products,” said Charlie Kegley, president of Swisslog Healthcare Solutions North America. “We have a significant commitment to technology development on behalf of our clients. This addition to our patent portfolio underscores that commitment and our capabilities.”
