This live interactive video format is finally putting the web to use in its full level of direct citizen involvement in the way it was meant to be used.

Shawn Thompson, author of The Intimate Ape: Orangutans and the Secret Life of a Vanishing Species, is partnering with to save the dwindling orangutan population. offers free web conferencing, and Thompson is hosting a BigMarker Club to connect orangutan activists from all over the world.

The mission of the Club, the Orangutan Club International, is to foster global networking and co-operation among people who care for the welfare of orangutans, a species endangered as agriculture and logging demolish their rain forest habitat. Club members are able to share ideas, collaborate, and coordinate to raise awareness on the issues that orangutans and other apes face. Their first free web event is on November 12th, starting at 7:00 PM Eastern.

"This live interactive video format is finally putting the web to use in its full level of direct citizen involvement in the way it was meant to be used,” Thompson stated. “This is another step forward like Wikipedia, Wikileaks, and the smart phone, where citizens become the broadcasters. I think we need to use this technology in innovative ways for good purposes, not just to depose tyrants, but to help save wildlife and the environment, which is my particular interest."

Shawn Thompson, a writer, traveler and university professor, is a member of the board of Orang Utan Republik, a non-profit organization working at a grass-roots level in Indonesia to save orangutans from extinction.
