Steve Zafiris’ new book reveals the author’s life and his rewarding but difficult journey to success

A successful businessman, owner/operator of several McDonald’s Restaurants, author Steve Zafiris can legitimately be classed as an extremely well-off, individual by any standards. But his success has not been automatic. In ''God Bless America and the Golden Arches''-- S.Z., he shares his rewarding but difficult trip.

As the author looks back on what it took him to get to this point in his life, he thought to himself, “need to document this story for my family. I need them to know in detail about my life, not just the bits and pieces I’ve shared with them from time to time. I want them to know and appreciate that this United States is truly the land of dreams and opportunity. But, I also want them to have a deeper appreciation for their heritage”.

Zafiris’ journey begins with his birth on Sunday June 19, 1938 into a large poverty-stricken family in Europe. He shares about his childhood during World War II, a sometimes terror-filled existence in his home country of Greece occupied at times by foreign troops and always caught between the competing forces among the many political, diplomatic, sociological and ethnic alliances that cropped up after the First World War and lasted for decades. As a teenager, he made a vow to rise above the life into which he had been cast.

The author then became a teenage immigrant from Greece, kept his focus on pursuing the “American Dream” of success by becoming a citizen; by dedicated hard work; and how he learned of, and seized, the opportunity presented by (at that point in time) a small restaurant chain called McDonald’s. Although Zafiris knew that his children and grandchildren and future generations wouldn’t go through the hardships he had, he wanted them to understand that each person is responsible for his or her own successes and failures, and that there are no guarantees.
