It’s a complete tool for creating indoor navigation services and applications; one platform to suit all [their] needs.

The Indoor Maps and Positioning platform provides developers with the tools necessary to create their own indoor maps and enable their own positioning.

It is a complete system featuring:

  • A Map Studio
  • An Android Map API
  • An Android Wi-Fi Positioning API

“Indoor maps and indoor positioning are not so unusual anymore. There are several players in both areas. But where we stand out is that we provide a complete system. Developers no longer have to rely on maps from third parties. With the Indoor Maps and Positioning platform, we provide a map studio, SDKs and positioning,” states Head of Ericsson Labs, Tor Björn Minde. “Since all of the software is provided in one API, it’s very easy for developers to create their own maps.”

“Hotels, universities, airports. All of these locations could benefit from apps created using our indoor navigation tool,” explains Minde. “Because the Indoor Map and Positioning platform uses Wi-Fi, it will allow end-users to position themselves on a map and have a truly interactive map experience as they make their way through a busy terminal or campus area.”

Ericsson Labs' Indoor Maps and Positioning platform puts the developers in charge. It gives them all the tools they need to create their own indoor maps and enable their own positioning.
Minde adds, “it’s a complete tool for creating indoor navigation services and applications; one platform to suit all their needs.”

-About Ericsson Labs-
Ericsson Labs is the part of Ericsson Research that focuses on iterative open innovation and experiments with new technologies, services and business models by working with partners including technology providers and third-party developers.

Ericsson Labs provides access to experimental APIs in their infancy so that developers can create new, innovative services. We provide the network, server and support and in turn, we hope to gain feedback so that we can improve certain functionalities or even completely shut down an API based on user interest. Our developer community makes it easy to get in touch with experts from different fields. The showroom on Ericsson Labs offers developers a platform for performing user testing of their applications. In addition to being displayed in the showroom, services can be made available to end-users via any established application store.
