To ensure that long-term financial targets are met, universities to need to make themselves standout from the competition and attract a full quota of students every year, warns Perspective, the Midlands-based pioneers of apprentice monitoring software.

With tuition fees rising, over half of the UK’s universities are expecting a drop in student applications. While some are predicting a first year decrease of two per cent, others are fearful that the true figure will be closer to twenty per cent, according to a report published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce).

To sustain what little financial security there is in the sector, Paul Davis of Perspective believes universities need to fill every student place available – a problem that certainly hasn’t been a evident in recent history. However, despite this not being a problem for the large majority of institutions in the short to medium-term, in the long-term, if number continue to decline, universities are going to have to be particularly vigilant of the potential consequences and thus, need to act now.

Paul Davis, managing director of student management system provider Perspective, commented: “Over the past few years there hasn’t been enough places but now, with the new high-fee tuition, filling places has to be a very real worry for some universities. To ensure that the problem is constrained, universities must look to tackle any ailing grades and increase overall pass rates which, obviously isn’t easy but, can be achieved by tracking learner progress throughout a course on an individual basis.”

Perspective’s Sunesis software can assist universities to achieve this rise from a simple to use and highly effective online platform. Each student’s progress and attendance is recorded in real time with any unexplained fluctuations bought to the attention of the learning provider where it can be dealt with immediately.

Paul continued: “As well as effective student monitoring, an additional problem faced by many universities is learner funding management and ensuring that full entitlements are received. It’s a process that seems to get more and more complex and as a result, it’s easy to under claim. Sunesis incorporates software called Funding Manager, which ensures that universities have full control of funding, quality and compliance from day one. It also ensures that funding submission claims are 100 per cent valid to guarantee that maximum funding is received.

“There are many routes that a university can take to attract students, but these two are particularly pertinent and they’re easier to implement than many may think.”

Perspective provides monitoring software to blue chip companies nationwide and to over 60 Local Authorities within the UK. For more information, please visit or call 0121 506 9540.
