The Koemei / Entwine partnership is a critical step to bringing a low cost transcription solution to the Educational Sector where there is a clear and present need for accessibility

Businesses, Governments and Educational institutions generate ever-increasing video and audio content through meetings, communications and training. Often, this content contains important, time-critical information but remains largely inaccessible. By converting video and audio content into text, it can be made more accessible to viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as searchable and manageable at word level for all stakeholders. This way, everyone has easy access to what’s been said and when, and dormant video archives are transformed into productive assets.
Koemei, developers of the first Automated Multiparty Speech Recognition Engine, and Entwine, provider of professional services and support for the open source media capture platform, Opencast Matterhorn, today announced their collaboration to launch an automated speech-to-text web-service for Opencast Matterhorn. In doing so, the world’s top educational institutions, using the open source platform, will be able to benefit from a seamless and low cost service powering captioning, and search and discovery of their lecture content.
Matterhorn is an open source platform developed by a community of experts from leading international universities which supports the integration of multimedia content into the learning environment, enabling institutions to produce, manage, and distribute lecture recordings and providing students with the tools to engage with educational media content.
While Entwine strives to provide the best possible solutions to facilitate media enhanced learning and helps institutions tackle the complexity of technology integration, Koemei is committed to enabling global exploitation of a pioneering speech recognition technology. “The Koemei / Entwine partnership is a critical step to bringing a low cost transcription solution to the Educational Sector where there is a clear and present need for accessibility” said Andy Wasklewicz, CEO and Co-Founder of Entwine.
Koemei is a spinout of the World-renowned IDIAP research institute, where the technology was developed as part of a European funded project. Entwine emerged in 2011 as a University sanctioned spin-off from the prestigious technology institution, ETH Zurich.
“The differentiator of our technology is that it enables high accuracy automated transcription of free conversational speech and can identify the speech of multiple speakers in a conference, meeting or lecture situation, for example, without the need for training.” said Temi Ola, CEO of Koemei SA. “Of course since we developed the technology, we also provide customized solutions to suit different institutions needs, particularly for educational and public institutions.”
This significant partnership will improve and enrich Opencast Matterhorn and is expected to contribute to growing adoption of Matterhorn by the Worlds top schools and colleges.
Conceived to provide students with the level of accessibility that they have come to expect and extend its reach across boarders and abilities, the automated transcription service promises to provide a single click bridge to a treasure trove of educational gold.

The service will be offered in a flexible software as a service model. The current ASR is in the English language and the French Language ASR will be ready in mid-2012.
Koemei is headquartered in Martigny, Switzerland and is in the process opening up its US operation in Silicon Valley. Koemei is a Spin-off of IDIAP, one of the World’s most renowned nonprofit research institutions.
It provides a cost effective and collaborative speech recognition solution for high-accuracy transcription of audio and video content such as videoconferences, group meetings, lectures and enterprise training videos. Koemei’s proprietary Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) Technology is the most sophisticated ASR solution in the world.
The Koemei Solution architecture was designed to deal with high perplexity from its conception. Its solution can identify different speakers and transcribe long free conversational speech in complete automation through a simple software as a service model. By converting video and audio content into text, it becomes more useful, accessible, sharable and manageable.
