Ameritas Group, a division of Ameritas Life Insurance Corp., is working with the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry to provide dental care to Lincoln, Nebraska, elementary students in need.
Ameritas Group sponsors the UNMC Dental Sealant Program that reaches out to several Lincoln public schools. Ameritas Group knows how important dental care is. That’s why they increased their contribution to the program this year by 50%.
UNMC College of Dentistry dental hygiene students and instructors provide a screening and any needed sealants to children in second, third and fifth grades. Ameritas Group provides a dental care kit for kids to take home, which includes a manual toothbrush, an electric toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, a small dental mirror and information about how to properly care for teeth.
To be eligible for the program, students must attend schools with 80% or higher free or reduced-fee lunch plans. This year’s program began with McPhee Elementary and will visit seven Lincoln schools through April 2012. The Dental Sealant Program will help approximately 1,050 kids in Lincoln.
“I am so proud of the work these dental students and instructors are doing in the Dental Sealant Program,” says Karen Gustin, senior vice president – marketing, national accounts and block acquisition, Ameritas Group. “The good that is being done for the elementary students is wonderful prevention for those in the Nebraska school systems.”
After the dental screenings, a note about the children’s dental health is sent home so their parents know if their child received any sealants or if they need to see a dentist for further dental care. Students, parents, and teachers greatly appreciate this free program and the preventive care provided by the UNMC dental hygiene department.
