A recent study out of Wake Forest University reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine has proven that walking combined with weight loss may result in mobility increases as high as 20% in older obese adults with cardiovascular health issues. It was previously believed that it was unhealthy to encourage weight loss in older adults, however the Wake Forest study dispelled this myth. Following 288 participants ranging in age from 60 to 79 over an 18 month span they were divided into three groups. Group one received education about healthy aging, group two engaged in walking exercises and group three engaged in walking and a weight loss program.
Group two did well overall but the most dramatic gains were seen in group three. On average this group improved mobility by 5% as measured by their ability to walk 400 meters. Surprisingly, mobility increased as much as 20% among those in the group who were in the poorest heart health at the start of the study.
