Brachytherapy is an exciting innovation in the pet oncology field.

Specialty animal services are about more than just spectacular technology and innovative treatments. They’re about improving care for cherished family members. The veterinary specialists at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists (OSVS) understand this, and are proud to provide a full line of veterinary specialist services that can prolong health lives for many of New England's most beloved pets.

Take, for example, one of OSVS’s latest offerings: brachytherapy — an innovative treatment that makes fighting cancer more affordable and less debilitating.

Brachytherapy has become a popular treatment over the past several years in human medicine and now is being introduced into the veterinary market — for good reason: It's more affordable. It treats a variety of different cancers (although for some cancers, traditional radiation therapy is a better option) and fewer overall treatments are required. Most radiation regiments normally require around 15 to 20 outpatient visits, whereas brachytherapy often only requires four or five.

Basically, it works by placing the radioactive source into or onto a tumor, thereby attacking the tumor from the inside out. For pets, radiation treatment is often prohibitively expensive or time-consuming. OSVS uses the state-of-the-art Accent Brachytherapy System for its treatments.

Brachytherapy is neither for every cancer nor every pet, but it’s an exciting innovation in the pet oncology field and yet another example of OSVS’s cutting edge specialty animal services.
