Firstat Nursing Services, a premier home nursing agency and home health agency in San Diego, CA is supporting Fire Safety Month by publishing a Disaster Planning Guide for Seniors to help families understand the importance of planning for natural and “man-made” disasters.
The National Fire Protection Association estimates that there are between 350,000 and 400,000 house fires in the United States each year. Add to that other natural disasters like hurricanes, tornados, flooding and loss of electricity(,) and the people affected grows significantly.
“Although people of every age are affected by natural disasters, seniors are particularly vulnerable,” says Linnea Goodrich, president of Firstat Nursing Services. “Many seniors have physical and cognitive limitations which affect their ability to react to a dangerous or changing environment like a fire or loss of electricity. Mobility, communication and getting necessary medication are all impacted.”
“Many articles are published each year throughout the USA on preparing for disaster, but only a relative few concentrate specifically on senior citizens who depend or rely on the care of others. That’s why I decided to publish a guide to help seniors, their families and in some cases their caregivers prepare ahead of time,” continued Goodrich.
The guide labeled as an Essential Planning Guide for Natural Disasters outlines the 7 key steps to disaster planning for seniors and their families, whether they live alone, live with a family member or at an assisted living facility. Steps range from preparing the home ahead of time, to evacuation plans to how caregivers can help.
“Creating a plan ahead of time is the best way to cope when disaster strikes,” said Goodrich. This includes getting the names, addresses and phone numbers of doctors and hospitals as well as making sure that you have an accurate and detailed list of prescriptions and their instructions to be sure they are continued uninterrupted.”
