The 2012 Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon (PHLYTRI), one of the top ranked multi-sport events in the country, opens for registration November 1. The 8th annual event hosts three days of competition and activities and returns for a third year as a featured race in the internationally-renowned Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup.

Taking place June 22-24, the 2012 event weekend includes the PHLYTRI Olympic distance race (1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run), the PHLYTRI Sprint distance race (.9K swim, 24K bike and 5K run), Kids Fun Runs & Duathlons and a two-day multi-sport expo. “The Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon continues to lead as one of the premier triathlon weekends in the country and we’re truly excited to welcome back the thousands of athletes who choose to race with us in Philadelphia each year,” said Richard Adler, CEO, Philadelphia Triathlon, LLC. “Last year, we hosted the largest and deepest professional field in the event’s history and expect more top pros as we continue in 2012 as one of the featured races in the Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup. We expect registration to move quickly as pros, elites and age groupers continue to choose PHLYTRI for our legendary course with a fast swim, scenic and challenging bike course, and flat and fast run through Fairmount Park.”

The 2012 PHLYTRI continues for a third year as one of seven races in the Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup, the premier triathlon series for non-drafting International distance racing, showcasing the top International distance events across America.

The event will again feature an Aqua Bike event as well as an Elite Amateur wave in both the Olympic and Sprint Races. Eligibility for the Olympic Elite Amateur wave requires a time under 2:10 for men and 2:30 for women within the past two years. The top three finishers in the Olympic Elite Amateur wave will qualify for the Toyota US Open in October, the championship event of the Life Time Fitness Series.

The Cancer Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) returns as the founding charitable beneficiary of the 2012 PHLYTRI. A partner since the event’s inception, The Cancer Center at CHOP has received over $500,000 in contributions through race related programs during the past seven years and benefits greatly from the 5th Annual Karr Barth CHOP Charity Challenge, a team challenge competition, included in the PHLYTRI Sprint race.

Founded in 2005, the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon is one of the largest and most popular triathlons in the country. Held in the city’s historic Fairmount Park, the race was named a top-five triathlon in the United States by Outside Magazine, was lauded as one of the top big city triathlons by Inside Triathlon Magazine, and named one of the “10 Greenest Races” by Triathlete Magazine.
