Many people dislike math and one of the probable reasons why is mental computation. Mental computation is the process of calculation without pen and paper or a calculator. Most people rely on calculators and do not realize many problems can be solved mentally. Author Dr. Woodrow Sun challenges both the learned and the beginner in mental computation as he shares Dance with Numbers.
While there are other books on the subject of mental computation, most are written for appreciation only. Dance with Numbers is a workbook designed for practical use, with step-by-step examples and problems. It is designed for self-study; it is written in simple, concise language to be easily understood by the individual. Throughout the pages, the author presents exciting ways to solve basic arithmetic operations: subtraction, addition, multiplication, and the squaring of numbers.
This workbook is divided up into eight chapters, so the best way is to study a chapter or a section every day. It takes an estimated twelve hours effort to read and learn the material within. However, readers will learn the most if they go at their own pace. If there is a section that seems particularly difficult, the reader should take their time studying the step-by-step examples. Once a reader has done this, they will not only have much more confidence calculating numbers in their head, but it will also increase their mental capacity.
Dance with Numbers will be featured at the California School Library Book Exhibit in Pasadena, CA on November 11-14, 2011.
