The Professional Patient Advocate Institute Announces the 2011 Patient Advocate Conference and Awards Presentation in Orlando, FL - 12/5/2011

This Patient Advocate Conference is an event that will bring together patient advocates and other like-minded health care professionals for learning, networking and celebrating accomplishments made in this field.

On Dec. 5, the Professional Patient Advocate Institute in partnership with healthcare media publisher Dorland Health will host a day-long interactive learning event to shed light on the emerging practice of patient advocacy. We will also hold an awards ceremony to announce the winners and recognize professionals making a difference in the area of patient advocacy in 20 categories.

“Just as patients face challenges on a daily basis, so do their families, caregivers and advocates.” says Anne Llewellyn, chairperson of the conference. “Amidst a rapidly aging population, poor quality care coordination, an influx of new consumers into the healthcare system under federal healthcare reform, increasing healthcare costs and other pressures, there has never been a greater need for patient advocates than there is now.”

Designed for both independent patient advocates and professionals employed by hospitals, managed care settings and a host of other organizations, the conference is meant to promote a culture of clinical and professional competence that will improve the health and welfare of patients.

The conference offers the unique opportunity to learn from experienced patient advocates who will share real-world strategies on how business owners can enhance their practices, skills and patient outcomes.

The Patient Advocate Conference – the first event of its kind – will provide a platform for advocates to interact, share ideas and gain information and takeaways to help empower patients as they transition through the healthcare system.

The conference will feature Michelle King Robson, founder and chairman of EmpowHER, an award-winning health media company for women, as its opening keynote speaker.

Additional sessions will provide advocates with:

  •     Strategies to meet the needs of consumers by enhancing your skills as an advocate.
  •     Advice from experts on how to improve advocates’ practice, regardless of the setting.
  •     Real-world solutions for making navigating the healthcare system easier.
  •     An understanding of the issues facing the growing geriatric population.
  •     Social media platforms, how to utilize them and make it part of a patient advocate's arsenal.
  •     Cutting-edge tools and technology that enhance patient management.
  •     Communication tactics and skills to achieve better outcomes.
  •     Skills to improve the quality of life for those with chronic conditions.
  •     Collaboration tactics to make it easier to gain access, information and resources from the healthcare team.
  •     New ideas and solutions to enhance patient- and family-centered care.

On Dec. 4, interested professionals can join the Professional Patient Advocate Institute for an all-day workshop before the conference. This event will provide an extensive overview of patient advocacy, including the skills needed to be an effective advocate and the knowledge to sharpen case and care management skills.

The workshop can be taken as a step toward earning a Certificate in Patient Advocacy or as a stand-alone educational opportunity, worth 7 hours of Continuing Education Credits (CEs).

The Patient Advocate Conference will be held on Monday, Dec. 5 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Gaylord Palms Hotel in Orlando, Fla. The Professional Patient Advocate Workshop will be held the day before, on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the same location.
