AXP640 AdvancedTCA chassis exceeds telecom industry’s highest thermal management standard to enable use of next generation processors

A unique new six-slot 40G AdvancedTCA® shelf, the AXP640, designed for use in both carrier-grade telecom equipment and high-availability network gear outside the telecom environment, is today unveiled by Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity™.

The Emerson Network Power AXP640 is the only six-slot 40G ATCA shelf in the industry that has a combination of front-to-rear airflow cooling and variants suitable for AC or DC input power. The thermal cooling performance of the AXP640 exceeds the telecom industry’s highest standard, CP-TA B.4, which defines not only the airflow, but the cooling performance during maintenance procedures and redundant fan failures. Input power is a very generous 350W-per-slot, providing ample margin for high power ATCA blades in environments such as the network data center. It therefore provides the best six-slot ATCA environment available today to support network equipment manufacturers’ migration to next-generation higher-throughput data and packet processors, such as those used on Emerson Network Power’s ATCA-9405 packet processing blade or ATCA-8310 DSP/media processing blade. This cooling environment is consistent with the company’s other 40G ATCA platforms, the two-slot Centellis 2000 and 14-slot Centellis 4440, giving Emerson Network Power the most complete portfolio of scalable ATCA platforms in the industry.

Rob Pettigrew, director of marketing for Emerson Network Power’s Embedded Computing business, said: “The building practice employed by typical telecom customers requires that all equipment have front-to-rear, rather than side-to-side cooling. In smaller ATCA systems, with horizontally configured boards, this is difficult. That’s why most six-slot and two-slot systems on the market today have side-to-side cooling. With the AXP640, we offer not only the airflow configuration demanded by the market, but also a system with industry leading cooling capacity, input power capacity, and input power configurations for both traditional telecom DC power environments, and non-telecom AC environments such as the network data center.”

The AXP640 shelf will be available as a chassis only, as a 10G ATCA platform, or as a 40G ATCA platform when integrated with Emerson Network Power’s switch blades. It is available now from Emerson Network Power and its authorized distributors.
